Blog: Why Wear Abatement Strategies Are Necessary

Why Wear Abatement Strategies Are Necessary | Prab.com

Although any good equipment design will incorporate some sort of safety factor for wear, more application-specific details should be shared with the design engineer. This will ensure less wear, better value, and a longer lasting piece of equipment.

Some key application details to share with the design engineer for equipment in the metal scrap handling industries are:

  1. Specific alloy or alloys to be handled
  2. Metal chip geometries, densities, and abrasiveness expected
  3. How equipment will be fed
  4. Specific volume and type of cutting fluids
  5. Actual normal process rate
  6. Maximum surge or instantaneous rate
  7. Frequency and description of bar ends, parts, or tramp metal in the chips

Knowing this data will help the engineer design the equipment with the proper level and placement of wear resistance for your application.

Any equipment that is going to be handling scrap metal needs to be rugged, and therefore must be strategically designed to withstand the wear and tear caused by scrap metal. While the initial cost may be higher, there is a difference between low initial upfront cost and long-lasting durable equipment that equals a low total cost of ownership.
