Prab Retractable Furnace Feeder Solves Die Caster's Concern For Safety, Productivity And Energy Efficiency

Application: Charging two, tilting, side-ported aluminum remelt furnace with die cast scrap and ingots while maximizing employee safety.

Problem
In a limited space, this die caster needed a remelt system for two side-ported die cast furnaces. It was essential to keep employees a safe distance from the tilting furnaces which operate at 1,350°F. To help conserve valuable energy the system must provide for automatically closing the pneumatically actuated charging gate once material has been loaded.

Solution
This Prab system includes a master control panel, and a centrally located Prab 4 in. pitch (Z-Style) steel belt-elevating conveyor. The conveyor discharges into a left/right bi-directional chute which diverts the material onto one of two Prab oscillating furnace feeders. The track mounted oscillator rolls into position where the units replaceable stainless steel discharge pan extends through the furnace's charging gate and into the charging area. A self-contained hydraulic unit, with a 4 ft stroke. Powers the oscillator into its furnace loading position and retracts it after loading. This allows the charging gate to be automatically closed and locked.

Results
The Prab engineered die cast furnace charging system-improved productivity for the die caster. Now two alloy melts are possible at the same time - one in each furnace. The operator simply activates the proper switch on the control panel which indicates the furnace to be charged. This solution met the limited space requirement, keeps employees a safe distance from the furnace, while it is being charged, and allows charging gates to be closed automatically to conserve energy during melting and pouring.
